Script Consultant Shannan E. Johnson

This weeks Writer Wednesday is Shannan E. Johnson from Los Angeles, California! Shannan is a script consultant and the CEO of The Professional Pen, which she says is the first Black-owned script consultant agency. TPP’s writer-centered, straight-shot no-chaser feedback helps develop emerging and established writers from idea to pitch through consultations, services, workshops and courses.

Shannan will be leading a DWR virtual workshop, “How to Turn Your Idea into a Screenplay,” on Dec. 2 at 6 p.m. EST. We hope to see you there!

What is your favorite part of the writing process?

I’m a structure geek, so I actually enjoy the outline process. It’s where I figure out all of the kinks and rid myself of story holes before the fun begins on the blank page.

What does your writing workspace look like?

I usually write at my desk (boring, I know) or the kitchen table.

What plans do you have for DWR’s workshop you’re leading on Dec. 2?

Our workshop will focus on how any idea can be fleshed out to a story. We welcome all creatives to join to learn how they can share their stories on the screen.

What is your favorite non-writing hobby?

Karaoke. I don’t do it often, but I love it.

What is your favorite piece of writing advice?

Set realistic expectations and goals. Allow yourself to grow through your writing process. Just as you wouldn’t scold a 2-month-old baby who can’t walk, give yourself grace to crawl before you sprint.

What writing projects are you currently working on?

I’m currently polishing and rewriting screenplays for my fabulous Pen Pals (my clients). It’s so fun to look at their scripts like puzzles and find the missing pieces.
