Coaching Detroit Forward Multimedia Internship
Summer 2025
Coaching Detroit Forward is seeking a multimedia intern to work with our 2025 Photography and Journalism Camps for Detroit high school students. The camps are led by award-winning photographers, journalists and graphic designers who are coaches with The Detroit Writing Room as well as The New York Writing Room.
In early July, the two-week Journalism Camp will be held in partnership with Planet Detroit at Wayne State University’s Journalism Institute for Media Diversity. Up to 25 Detroit high school students will have the opportunity to write stories focused on health, the environment and social justice topics. Their stories will be published by Planet Detroit and in our annual print publication Perspectives Magazine. The multimedia intern will take daily photos of the camp experience as well as produce highlight videos for social media.
The two-week Beginner Photography Camp will be held at Bamboo Detroit in mid July, and the one-week Advanced Photography Camp will be held in Detroit (location TBA) in August. Each day during the photography camps, the high school students we coach explore the city of Detroit during photowalks with our photography coaches. The intern will accompany the students and coaches on these excursions in the city to capture the experience and may be asked to lead small groups of students to locations such as a nearby park for a photography assignment. The multimedia intern will work with a social media intern to post daily photos and content on Coaching Detroit Forward social media accounts such as Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. Photos may also be promoted on The Detroit Writing Room social accounts, newsletter, website and more.
This position involves helping with camp operations, which may include assisting coaches with photography lessons, prepping our camera inventory before camps begin, assisting students with their cameras and more. At the end of the summer, Coaching Detroit Forward will be producing the sixth edition of Perspectives Magazine featuring the stories and photography of students who attended the camps. The intern will be tasked with helping to compile the content and prepare it for production. Light editing may be involved.
The intern will have the opportunity to learn from some of the top photographers, writers and designers in Detroit. The coaches will be leading daily sessions for the high school students, and the intern will have a unique opportunity to network with these professionals and assist them with their needs for the programs. The intern will also work closely with Coaching Detroit Forward executive director Stephanie Steinberg.
