This week’s Writer Wednesday features our DWR house poet Kompozition! The Detroit poet, audio engineer and yoga teacher also goes by The Sound Yogi, or Krystalle. She’s currently working on her first poetry and meditation album.

You can hear her latest poems at our monthly open mic nights, The Art of Poetry. Kompozition is also moderating our Black Voices Series ft. Detroit Poets in celebration of National Poetry Month. Come join us for the virtual event on April 29 at 7 p.m. to hear poetry readings and participate in a discussion and Q&A.

What is your favorite part of the writing process?

I believe in setting my intentions from the very beginning. I light sage, play music without words and take some breaths. Deep intentional inhales until I feel the piece start to take form.

What does your writing workspace look like?

I have a wave projector and adjustable lighting. I have a home recording studio so I am usually writing there.

What draws you to poetry? Is there anything about life or the world that you think is particularly suited for poetic interpretation?

Poetry has always represented freedom to me.  I am a music lover and music is usually so structured in production and in arrangement. Poetry has the best of all worlds. The ability to be structured as well as kind of freestyle. There is no right or wrong way to be a poet and that draws me to the art. I believe everything is open for poetic interpretation, there are literally no boundaries.

What is your favorite non-writing hobby?

Yoga. I am a 200 RYT Trauma informed Yoga Teacher

What is your favorite piece of writing advice?

Let Go and write from your space.
