This week’s Writer Wednesday features Candace Roulo, a content developer, writer and editor from Troy. Candace enjoys photography and taking part in our monthly Yoga for Writers classes that meld yoga and journaling. Learn more about her below!

What is your favorite part of the journaling process?

I view a journal as a blank canvas — I can write whatever comes to my mind and use journaling as part of a meditation process. It always feels good to get my thoughts out of my head and onto a piece of paper.

What does your writing workspace look like?

My writing space is evolving. It is also my office space. Once I was working from home, I decided to paint an accent wall in teal and just recently bought some fun canvas artwork to display on that wall. I enjoy reading books, so I need to expand my bookshelves too. But I do like my writing space/home office. It has a lot of sunlight that comes into it, and I can look out the window and see trees and see if it is snowing, raining, sunny, etc.

We know you love photography! Of the photos you’ve taken, what is your favorite?

This is a tough question for me to answer since I have many favorite photos. But if I have to pick one it is a black and white photo of my dog Coco and my mom’s dog Pancho. I had the photo enlarged and then framed it. It is now hanging in my kitchen above a mid-century bar. It is a very cute photo of them wearing hats, laying on a chair.

What is your favorite non-writing hobby?

I enjoy being active, it helps with creativity. I do enjoy golfing and looking forward to playing this summer. I plan to go to the driving range very soon to start practicing for a league my friend and I are going to join. I also enjoy biking, hiking and rollerblading.

What is your favorite piece of writing advice?

Once a teacher told me to just start writing — do not be afraid of a blank page. You can always go back and edit, move things around, start over, go through as many versions as you want until you are happy with the piece. I now do not freeze when I do not know exactly what to write. It is indeed a process.

What writing/photography projects are you currently working on?

On a daily basis I oversee content development projects for DSM Engineering Materials. As a hobby I take photography classes, and two of them recently started this week. I am taking a portrait photography class.
