English Teacher Blake Pynnonen
This week’s Writer Wednesday features English teacher and screenplay writer Blake Pynnonen!
Based in Royal Oak, Michigan, Blake enjoys writing screenplays and cooking delicious Korean food. Above all else, he is a dedicated teacher with a passion for helping students find their voices through writing!
High school students, join us on Dec. 7 for his virtual workshop, “The Hero’s Journey: Crafting Your Adventure Story!” Discover how stories like "Star Wars" and "Harry Potter" follow the same narrative structure and learn how to craft your own adventure story.
What writing projects are you currently working on?
I’m currently working on some screenplays. My main focus is a coming-of-age story and dark comedy about an English teacher in South Korea.
I also have a Catwoman origin story on the back burner, as well as a biopic about Malcolm McLean — the inventor of the intermodal shipping container.
What is your favorite part of the writing process?
My favorite part of the writing process is sharing it with others. Luckily, I have a group I meet with weekly where I can do just that.
What does your writing workspace look like?
I try to keep things simple; usually, I have a surface clear enough to house my laptop, my external monitor, a notebook, and some snacks and drinks.
What do you hope students will take away creatively from learning the Hero's Journey?
I hope that my students learn that they have powerful stories from their own lives and imaginations that are worth sharing with others.
What is your favorite non-writing hobby?
My favorite non-writing hobby is cooking for other people. I like cooking Korean food.
What is your favorite piece of writing advice?
Kill your darlings.
