Yoga for Writers Instructor Lindsay Madison

This week’s Writer Wednesday features Lindsay Madison of Ferndale! Lindsay is The Detroit Writing Room’s Yoga for Writers instructor. Her classes feature an hour of relaxing yoga, followed by an hour of guided journaling prompts. Lindsay is leading our first in-person experience in over a year! Join us on Saturday, Sept. 25, 2021 at the DWR for a daylong Yoga for Writers Retreat!

Read more about Lindsay and her journaling and yoga practices below!

What is your favorite part of the journaling process?

Personally I love journaling as a way to process my emotions or as a way to take a different perspective on things. During our guided journaling sessions it’s really cool to see the different ways each prompt is received and answered by everyone else.

What does your Yoga for Writers workspace look like? Where else do you like to journal?

I’m fortunate to have a home yoga studio that I can practice in, but I take my journal everywhere.  I’ve written on planes, trains, in city parks and nature trails. My favorite time of day to write is the early morning, when the world is still waking up. I make a cup of tea, my dog usually curls up at my feet and I let my mind wander.

How does yoga influence your journaling?

Sometimes we can self-edit…yoga helps to unlock those creative pathways so the words can flow a little freer.

What is your favorite non-journaling and non-yoga hobby?

I’m currently training for the Chicago Marathon in October. I was signed up to run last year and had to do it virtually because of the pandemic so I’m excited to finally run that course in the fall!

What is a piece of journaling advice you have for someone who isn’t feeling inspired or motivated to write?

Look up some journal prompts online (or attend one of our Yoga for Writers workshops!) and just let the words flow out. Don’t worry if any of it makes sense, it’s all just a practice.

What projects are you currently working on?

I like to stay busy! I currently run my yoga business (Visions Incorporated), consult for a vegan product line (Arbonne) and manage the marketing for a home inspection company (Journey Property Inspections). When I’m not busy working with one of those three companies I write for the online publications Fete Lifestyle Magazine and Nu? Detroit.
