Author Trish Coates

This week’s Writer Wednesday features Writer Wednesday member and author Trish Coates of Royal Oak, Michigan! A lover of putting pen to paper, Trish is now at a point in life where writing can be her main focus. With some great ideas in mind, she is currently focused on writing not only one, but two new novels! Learn more about her below.

What writing projects are you currently working on?

I am focusing on a novel about a young girl growing up in northwest Detroit in 1964. I want to show my love for Mustangs, The Beatles and this wonderful, tough city. I am also doing research on another novel which will focus on the opportunities for women in the early silent film era of the 1910s.

What is your favorite part of the writing process?

I love that fantastical moment when my characters start talking to me — and disagreeing with me! I want them to do one thing, and they say, “Uh, no. I would never do that. I would do this instead.” Sometimes I have to listen to them.

What does your writing workspace look like?

I have a cubby in our spare room with a desk and shelves where I do the initial draft. I cuddle on the couch watching TV while I do the edits and rewrites.

What is your favorite non-writing hobby?

Reading, of course! I am learning to quilt and just started yoga.

What is your favorite piece of writing advice?

Write something every day even if it’s terrible. I hate to admit it, but it’s true. Even a bit of bad writing is further along on the journey than a blank page.
