New York Writing Room Coach Susan Merson
This week’s Writer Wednesday features author, educator, tarot reader and fiber artist Susan Merson. Her latest novel, “Oh Good Now This,” was released in February 2021. Susan is a New York Writing Room coach who coaches writers in fiction, flash fiction, memoir, playwriting and screenwriting.
Susan will be leading a six-week virtual course exploring character — wants and needs. “Who Are You, Anyway?” will be held Wednesdays starting Sept. 8. Check it out at newyorkwritingroom.com/events.
What is your favorite part of the writing process?
Getting quiet is my favorite part. Being still enough to allow things to connect and flow.
What does your writing workspace look like?
At the moment I have a large studio with wooden shelves and a large rhododendron out my window.
What do you know now that you wish you had known at the beginning of your writing career or journey?
It’s the process not the product that makes the real change.
What is your favorite non-writing hobby?
I am a textile artist. I’m constantly making rugs and quilts and odd looking sweaters.
What is your favorite piece of writing advice?
Write what you know and surprise yourself at the breadth of your knowledge.
What writing projects are you currently working on?
I am on the latest final draft of my novel about the Trump years, “How We Saw the Moon.” Also, editing several manuscripts, running the NY Writers Bloc, and teaching my VOICING class for emergent writers. I look forward to The New York Writing Room workshop WHO ARE YOU ANYWAY: A Deep Dive into Character that will run for six weeks starting in September online with an in-person final event.
