This week’s Writer Wednesday features publisher, author and speaker Sierra Kay!

Based in Chicago, Sierra is a force in the writing industry, captivating readers with her best-selling suspense novels that delve into the depths of the human psyche. Beyond novels, she explores poetry and sketch comedy, showcasing her diverse creative expression.

Sierra will be leading our virtual workshop, “The Psychology of Book Cover Design,” on Nov. 19, 2024, at 7 p.m. EST. People do judge books by their cover — learn how to make yours stand out!

What writing projects are you currently working on?

I'm thrilled to share that I'm working on an Anti-Valentine's Day anthology and am calling for submissions! As a suspense and thriller author, I simply couldn't write a romance. I've already penned a book that's loosely based on a disastrous date I had with someone my friends collectively vetoed. I figured I can't be the only one with such stories! We're seeking thriller and suspense stories ranging from 2,000 to 2,500 words at vegaunleashed.com/nolovestories.

What is your favorite part of the writing process?

In the writing process, I love that initial spark of an idea. It’s that moment when something is brewing, but you’re unsure of how or when it will evolve. That thought can blossom into a fully developed character or plot line, prompting me to whip out my phone to take notes — or, if I’m in a meeting, my focus shifts to that story rather than whatever is happening.

What does your writing workspace look like?

I need a table, computer, headphones, and notepad — those are my essentials. Oh, and an ergonomic chair. Some writing sessions can be quite long. The location varies; sometimes I work at the dining room table, other times in my office, and occasionally at a coffee shop. I enjoy keeping it fresh!

Since the book cover is often the first interaction a reader has with a book, what key elements do you believe are crucial for making an immediate impact?

As a publisher, I always begin with research. I believe that understanding the market is crucial for making an immediate impact. This goes beyond just the genre — though that is very important. It also involves examining the other covers in the target market. What similarities or differences do you want to highlight, and why?

What is your favorite non-writing hobby?

At the moment, my favorite non-writing hobby is fantasy football. I'm in two leagues, which definitely takes up a lot of mental space. It requires me to know far too much about players I'll never meet in real life. To make it even more interesting, none of the players I'm tracking are on my favorite football team. Fortunately, it doesn't last all year long!

What is your favorite piece of writing advice?

Growing up, my mom had us memorize "Thinking" by Walter Wintle. It’s my favorite piece of advice, hands down. It begins like this:

If you think you are beaten, you are;

If you think you dare not, you don't.

If you'd like to win, but you think you can't,

It is almost a cinch you won't.

If you think you'll lose, you've lost;

For out in this world we find

Success begins with a fellow's will—

It's all in the state of mind.

There’s more, of course, but my mother emphasized the importance of mindset long before it became a popular topic. This advice remains my favorite for anything: have the confidence to believe that you can achieve each of your goals.
