Life Coach Jimel Jones
This week’s Writer Wednesday features Jimel Jones, a life coach based in Toledo, Ohio. Coach Jones is working on a utopian historical fiction novel and enjoys writing essays about current events. He’s also a fan of rhyming in short poems you can read on his Instagram or Twitter accounts. When he’s in Detroit, you can probably find him at Madcap Coffee (if not the DWR). Learn more about him below!
What is your favorite part of the writing process?
My favorite part of the writing process is interacting with humans and situations that create texture in stories, essays or poems. I suppose many writers keep note pads and phones handy to jot down things that pop up.
What does your writing workspace look like?
My workspace is usually a local coffee shop. There are 14 local coffee shops that I write at. Each place has a different creative energy. There is a coffee mug, a bottle of water, iPad, MacBook, iPhone, camera and notepad. Oftentimes there is something inspirational hanging around such as a paper weight, magnet, small toy or photograph.
What draws you to rhyming? What is your favorite thing about it?
I enjoy rhyming because it is interesting to see and hear how words are connected. Not only by their sound but also by their meanings. I’m drawn to rhyming because poems communicate multiple meanings which are all fluid. My favorite thing about rhyming is that it creates a rhythm for the reader.
What is your favorite non-writing hobby?
My favorite non-writing hobbies include watching all types of sports, coffee shop hopping and enjoying life.
What is your favorite piece of writing advice?
Write about what you love. If there is a book about something that doesn’t exist, perhaps you should write it. Write about what you know. These are statements I’ve come across, not my own. Lol
