This week’s Writer Wednesday features Emily Kay, a lifestyle blogger, creative consultant and aspiring novelist based in Metro Detroit. She often writes about fashion, travel, parenting and home decor on her blog “Isn’t That Charming.” We especially love her recent post on children’s books that celebrate diversity. What is your favorite part of the writing process?

That moment when you get into a really productive and creative head space while writing, and things start flowing with ease. It’s such a great feeling.

What does your writing workspace look like?

I have three young kids, so right now my best answer is, “Inconsistent.” Ha! Sometimes I’m writing in my bed, other times I’m at a desk. Wherever and whenever I can get a few moments of quiet time is where I try to squeeze some writing in.

What writing projects are you currently working on?

Honestly, right now I’m just trying to survive this crazy time of COVID! I managed my website and consulting full time prior to COVID, but since March 2020, I’ve been a stay-at-home mom, caring for an infant and two toddlers all day.

One of the hardest things about this period for me has been needing to take a step back on my business ventures in order to prioritize my family. However, it’s been a really important time of personal reflection. I’ve had the unique opportunity to pause and reflect upon what it is that I truly want to do moving forward. My whole life, I’ve wanted to write a novel, and finally decided last fall that there’s no better time than now. I have my novel idea formalized (which surprisingly took MUCH longer and was harder to do than I ever thought), and I’ve begun writing, though I’m very much still just beginning the process. Trying to give myself grace during this crazy time!

All that said — I’m a newbie with novel writing, but that’s probably the project I’m most excited about right now! I also have taken on a few digital/creative consulting clients in 2021 as I’ve had some newfound free time with my daughters starting school again. I also try to write blog posts/social media content when I can!

What is one thing you’ve learned in the process of writing your novel?

I’d still consider myself very green with novel writing as I’ve just begun, but I definitely have discovered that I’m a “Plotter,” not a “Pantser!” Meaning, I work better when I plot things out before I begin, as opposed to flying by the seat of my pants while writing.

What is your favorite non-writing hobby?

It’s a tie between traveling and practicing photography.

What is your favorite piece of writing advice?

Show, don’t tell.
