What is your favorite part of the writing process?
My favorite part of the writing process is the prewriting stage because I’m able to let my imagination run wild! I love playing around with different topics and organizing my thoughts to craft a meaningful story that will evolve over time.
What does your writing workspace look like?
Opposed to working at my desk, I often find myself under a cozy blanket on the couch writing most of my stories. I love being surrounded by a few of my houseplants, an easel board with colorful sticky notes and a cork board with affirmations and inspiring words. I’ll burn a candle and have music lightly playing in the background to get in my creative flow.
What writing projects are you currently working on?
I am currently working on growing my blog, CharnaeInspires.com — a lifestyle blog that focuses on personal development, specifically in areas of self-discovery, self-love and self-care. I am also in the middle of working on my first novel, which I hope to publish this year.
What is your favorite thing about Detroit?
My favorite thing about my hometown is definitely the people! There are so many passionate, creative and driven people from Detroit who carry an attitude of determination. Regardless of the challenges people are up against, Detroiters will make a way to get the job done. I’m also inspired by how community-oriented we are. The way people show up to support one another in their community reminds me that there’s no place like home.
What is your favorite non-writing hobby?
I love traveling and immersing myself in the culture and history of different cities. It’s through exploring different parts of the world that I get the most inspiration. Afterwards, all I want to do is write about it!
What is your favorite piece of writing advice?
“The idea is to write it so that people hear it and it slides through the brain and goes straight to the heart.” – Dr. Maya Angelou
