This week’s Writer Wednesday features DWR member and romance author Beth Gelman of Wixom, Michigan!
Beth is an Amazon bestselling author who loves to pull on your heartstrings and get you riled up with her books. Beth loves to bring the steam in her contemporary romances about women who speak up, take what’s theirs and embrace their wild side. She loves lattes, yoga and dogs, but mostly sharing her life with her husband and children. Her next book, “Never Getting Ahead,” is releasing this spring.
What writing projects are you currently working on?
I’m working on the second book in my Dazed and Confused Steamy Romance Series, “Never Getting Ahead.”
What is your favorite part of the writing process?
When my characters take me on twists and turns. They are hilarious. (I know they aren’t real. LOL.)
What does your writing workspace look like?
I have a double-monitor setup: One for the dossier I use for each book that holds all the specific details I won’t remember later, and the other for the manuscript. I love little knick-knacks that are cute, funny or inspirational and have several of those around to muse at. And, finally, My Emotions Thesaurus. It’s the bomb when I can’t figure out exactly what an emotion physically looks like. (Or it takes too long to conjure up the perfect word or description. It’s a lifesaver!)
How do you approach creating chemistry between your characters?
They always seem to find something about each other that is strangely similar to their own psyche. When I’m writing comedy, it comes easier and less romantic-industry manufactured. I want it to be organic, and edgy. My characters are very emotional with long back stories that carry angst, trepidation or insecurities that the other character latches onto and pushes them to step out of their comfort zone, effectively making both character arcs grow.
What is your favorite non-writing hobby?
Of course, reading. Playing with any dog I can get my hands on. Puzzles. And, I’m not above shopping ;)
What is your favorite piece of writing advice?
Get over yourself. Just write what is in your heart, and stop putting up walls and excuses for not finishing your next “masterpiece.”
