Christin Fluellen

When were you an intern and what did you do?

I interned during the summer of 2023. I had the pleasure of serving as a social media intern where I ran DWR and CDF social media accounts and documented in-person events such as the author series. I also was thrilled to serve as an assistant coach for the journalism and photography camps.

What did you learn as an intern?

As an intern, I learned how to write for and communicate using social media. I learned the ins and outs of scheduling content on platforms such as Instagram, X and Facebook. I also was able to strengthen my creativity skills in the realm of content creation, marketing and to an extent, news writing. Finally, I learned how to better manage my time and became better organized!

How has the internship helped you in your career?

Interning with the DWR and CDF has helped me tremendously in my academic and professional career by teaching me to take initiative and communicate more effectively. As a line producer for my school's newscast, my experience serving as an assistant coach during CDF's summer camp taught me to be a better leader for the next generation of journalists and I was able to use those skills to coach and co-lead my school's newsroom. Being a social media intern also helped me get my foot in the door and establish foundational skills to be qualified for corporate internships.

What are you studying as a student?

As a student at Hampton University, my studies are going well! As I matriculate through Hampton, I am getting more of an idea of what kind of journalist I want to be and what causes I want to support in my work. I plan on going into political and advocacy journalism.
