Are you a high school student interested in enhancing your video skills?

The Detroit Writing Room’s 2020 Video Storytelling MasterClass is for you!

In this specialized program taught by WXYZ-TV Channel 7 reporter Jennifer Ann Wilson, you will learn to produce video stories from beginning to end using tools you have at home to bring memorable, truthful and impactful stories to life on video.

Whether you want to be a writer, producer, TV reporter, vlogger, YouTuber or documentary maker, this Video Storytelling MasterClass will give you the foundation you need to succeed.

During the course, you will produce, shoot, write, edit and voice several stories from beginning to end, using a range of mobile techniques and tools.

From shot sequences and lighting techniques to achieving good audio, you will learn visual storytelling techniques. Classes cover:

  • Writing for video and how it differs from writing for print

  • How to do a stand-up

  • On-camera performance techniques as a storytelling tool

  • How to get the best on-camera interviews from your subject

  • Journalism ethics and how they apply to social media reporting

Your final project will be distributed on The Detroit Writing Room website, YouTube and Facebook to be viewed by many.

Parents: This class will challenge your students to view topics and storylines from different perspectives, teach them to see the big picture and the impact small moments can have on outcomes.

Translating ideas and thoughts into a cohesive storyline and bringing it to life visually develops critical thinking, writing and strategic planning skills.
